Friday, November 1

Grade 6 Parents and Students,

The highlight of the week was our trip to the Edmonton Legislature on Wednesday.  After arriving, the students participated in a Mock Legislative debate, complete with costumes.  The students then had an opportunity to explore the history of democracy and the Legislature itself in the museum before watching a "movie in the round" about the history of Alberta.  After lunch, we toured the legislature building, learning about former Premiers and Lieutenant Governors, as well as the ceremonial mace made from plumbing parts that was used for over 50 years.  Our trip concluded by being introduced in the chamber during question period, before watching the debate between Rachel Notley and Jason Kenny.  You can watch our introduction and question period by following the link below.
We are creating a video compilation of our trip.   If any parent volunteers or students have photos or videos from the trip that they would like added to the video, please e-mail them to vjblyth@cbe.ab.ca or share them on Google Drive to vjblyth@educbe.ca.

Our Halloween activities on Thursday included a "bobbing for apples" stem challenge.  Each group of three had to design a device that could scoop apples out of a barrel using only, tape, pipe cleaners, paperclips, straws, and a popsicle stick.

We have been working on 2 digits by 2-3 digit multiplication this week.  Keep practicing your times tables at home.

Have a great weekend!

Artist in Residence
Please enjoy this stop motion video of our Artist in Residence, Ryan Willert, painting his mural.

Halloween Candy
Please limit the Halloween candy coming to school to one piece per day.  Sugar spikes cause concentration issues!  Thank you.

Pack in Pack Out Lunch
Starting this year, we have been attempting to reduce our SVS ecological footprint by moving towards a “Pack In and Pack Out” philosophy. Once a student has eaten their lunch or snack, the packaging of that item will be put back into lunch kits and returned home for recycling/ composting. In continuing to support this positive change, please provide a locking baggie for items such as apple cores, yogurt tubes etc. The baggie will be returned home with the student each day for composting at home and then should be added back into the lunch kit for the next day. Help us make a difference!
