Virtual Grade 6 Farewell Ceremony

Hello Grade 6 Families,

On Thursday, June 25, we are planning to go ahead with the Grade 6 Farewell Ceremony virtually at 2:30.  The Google Meet will include messages from the staff as well as video messages from interested students and photos of the students during the school year.  Please let us know if you do NOT want your child's photo to be part of the Grade 6 Farewell virtual ceremony.

We will have a yearbook pickup that morning from 9-11 in front of the school.  All students will be receiving a yearbook as a keepsake of their time at SVS.  Students have had the opportunity to write personalized messages for the yearbook which will be included in their book.

We look forward to seeing you at the Google Meet on June 25!

Friday, June 5 Bus Information + Week in Review

Dear Parents,

Please help us plan yellow school bus routes for next year by pre-registering before June 14, 2020.

We know that there are many unknowns and we do not yet know what September will look like to return to school. We understand that you may not have finalized your decisions for September. However, if you do not pre-register by June 14, we will not include your address as bus routes are planned. It may take up to 4 weeks to add a bus stop for you, and congregated stop locations are only reviewed once per year. As a result, your stop location may be much further away from your home, as your address was not included in the route planning. There is no requirement to pay at the time of registration, and there is no financial penalty if you register for bus service and cancel before the cancellation deadline.

If you have not already done the following, please do so now:
1. Create a Parent CBE PowerSchool Account using your student’s CBE number above by following the instructions at this website: https://sis.cbe.ab.ca/public/home.html

2. Sign up for school emails by “subscribing” to School Messenger: http://calgary.schoolmessenger.com/cbe_subscribe

Please see the picture below to see what we worked on this week in school.

Future Dates: June 23, 24, and 25- The school will be open for:
-picking up hard copies of report cards or IPPs if required
-returning all computers and/or technology that was borrowed

(Note: a schedule will be coming for safe arrival and departure)

First Week Check In

Hi Grade 6 Parents and Students,

Thank you for all of your support over the last week as we get our online classroom set up.

Assignments So Far
Introduction Video and Google Form
Journal Prompt
Show us your Crib
Scavenger Hunt for the Online Reference Centre

Please note that the due date for the week’s assignments will be Sunday at midnight.  We have extended the deadline to Monday this week to accommodate everyone learning a new program.

Every week we will post a "week at a glance" for students to see what their assignments will be.  We will post up to two assignments every weekday at 9:10. There will be non-mandatory assignments called “extensions” for students who choose to do so.

Just a reminder that we will be having our first Class Meeting at 10 on Monday morning.  If students post ? in the comments box, we will know that the student wants to ask a question.  If they put ! in the comments box, we will know that they want to make a comment.  As this is our first group meeting, it may be chaotic at first, but we will all figure it out together.

Please see the information below to see when your family can pick up their belongings.

Dear Simons Valley Parents/Guardians,

Thank you for being the amazing parent group that you are! Your patience and support as we navigate through these uncertain times is so appreciated. Our school mantra has been ‘We are all in this together!’ and truly what matters the most right now, is how we stay connected in uncertain times.
Many of you have asked about when you are able to come by the school and gather your child’s belongings as well as, returning library books. We would like to offer you the opportunity to come to SVS on
Thursday, April 9th AM (only) for student last names starting with A-L

Tuesday, April 14th AM (only) for student last names starting beginning with M-Z

ALTERNATE ONLY: Wednesday, April 15th

Please see the schedule below:

IMPORTANT: In accordance with Alberta Health Services and social distancing:
· If anyone in your family is ill, please do not come to the school. Student belongings will not leave the school and we can make arrangements at another time for you to come in when your family is healthy. We prefer to be cautious and not endanger the staff and their families.
· Only one parent, (no students will be allowed) is invited to come to the school at their designated time. Please make sure you know your child’s/children’s teacher’s name. Do not collect for any other families but your own.
· Ask your child the description of their indoor shoes.

This is not a time to socialize and catch up. We need you to be as efficient and quick as possible to help maximize the safety of everyone. We do request that you promptly collect your belongings, not engage in conversation and respect social distancing for your safety and that of our staff. (We don’t mean for this to be so quick and impersonal but health and safety is our number one priority).
Kindly follow the schedule below with the first letter of your child’s last name and enter through the glass doors by the parking lot (Grade One doors) and exit by the front doors on Sandarac Drive. We ask you to try to make it on Thursday/Tuesday and only come on Wednesday as an alternate.
SVS staff is working hard planning and organizing learning materials. We ask that you check your emails and our website Simons Valley School, as it can be translated into a variety of languages. Please feel free to contact us at the school at 403-777-6660 or email your child’s teacher. Although we have no idea when we will come out of this, if we stand by one another, we can somehow rise above it. After all, when this is all over, all that will really matter is how we treated each other.

Be Brave, Be Kind, Stay Positive,

Chris Snow, Principal

Gina Davidoff, Assistant Principal

About Google Classroom
Google Classroom is a free online platform that allows students, teachers and parents access to classroom lessons, assignments, assessment, resources and more.  Students in grade 6 have been working with google drive (docs, slides, forms) for a few years and will continue to use these tools. Google classroom takes all of these applications and puts them into one place.  Students and parents in 6C/D will have access to my Google classroom either today or tomorrow and all lessons will be distributed through this platform going forward. The video below is a brief overview of Google Classroom for parents.

Other Resources
We appreciate that this is a lot of information, along with all of the other resources/ emails you have received from the CBE. Please know that we are here to support both you and your children as we transition.

Sincerely,

Laurie Reeve and Vanessa Blyth

Friday, March 13

Dear Grade 6 Parents and Students,

*Important Message from the CBE*
Schools have received information from Calgary Board of Education Communications in regard to gatherings from now until Spring Break.
Please note:
  • Events including the school and regular staff population of the school MAY continue. This includes events such as after school clubs, practices, etc. Schools with scheduled field trips may still continue at this time.
  • Events that expand to include populations from other schools and/or parents or other community members should be postponed and further information will be provided after March break if they will be rescheduled or canceled. This includes events such as Parent-Teacher Interviews, school athletic competitions, drama/musical performances, etc.
We have chosen to postpone the following:
  • March 19th and 20th - Parent-Teacher Conferences
Thank you to all parents who have offered to volunteer for the book fair. We will create a new signup sheet when we reschedule the Scholastic Book Fair.

We will reschedule our Parent-Teacher Conferences at a later date.  Dismissal for Thursday, March 19th will continue to be EARLY DISMISSAL at 1:30 for Grades 1-6 as well as SKILL. Kindergarten there will be NO SCHOOL.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your support as we all share in these unique times.

We have had an interesting week of fielding questions about the COVID-19 infection from students who have heard rumors or had concerns.  We spoke about the importance of handwashing and avoiding touching your face, and worked to dispel some of the myths that often float around in a time like this. When a question was asked that we did not know the answer to, we looked to the Alberta Health Services website for information.

In math, we have been looking at how to multiply and divide decimal numbers by powers of ten (10, 100, 1000, etc).  The most effective approach to solving questions like these is to move the decimal either to the right to make a larger number (multiplication) or to the left to make a smaller number (division). With each question, we encourage the students to ask themselves, "is the answer I'm looking for going to be greater or less than the number I started with."

We concluded our Ancient Athens unit by completing our fictitious news article about an event in Athens.  Students wrote about the Trial of Socrates, a war between Sparta and Athens or and important vote send by the Council of 500 to the Assembly.  We also will have our Athens unit test on Monday and marks and corrections will be available next week. Students have a Google slide in their Google Drive and a review sheet to study from.

In Science, we did our final unit test on Thursday for Sky Science. Students will receive their marks, next week. We will be starting our Air and Aerodynamics unit where students will learn about how the properties of air contribute to flight.

The students have been learning about how to write narrative stories. We have been focusing on how to create an effective ending. Next week, we will work on how to plan for a story and put all of the parts of a story that we have been working on together, to create a final writing piece.

Have a great weekend!

Ms. Blyth
