Friday, February 28

Dear 6C Parents and Students,

Yesterday students had the opportunity to participate in a school tour of Sir John A. MacDonald.  While touring the school, students completed a scavenger hunt and learned all about what options they could take.  A notice went home about how to register for the options in Power School for the next school year.

In Math, we have been learning about decimals.  Students have been able to take their understanding of fractions and interpret this into a decimal.  They will soon be working on adding and subtracting decimals.

In Science, we are wrapping up our learning around Sky Science. Students completed their Planet trading cards and will be reviewing for their end of unit quiz.

In Social, we have been writing a news article about an event that happened in Ancient Athens.  The events are ranging from a decision made on Pnyx Hill, a trial that happened or an event that happened in the community.  Students will be wrapping up their article this upcoming week.

We will be having a meeting on Tuesday, March 10 at 4:00 for any parents who are interested in having a conversation about what the Grade 6 Farewell is going to look like.  We will chat about what we have done in the past and people can share their ideas for this year’s event.

Have a great weekend!

Ms. Blyth

Dear Grade 6 Parents and Students,

*Correction* The Sir John A Macdonald Student tour and open house are on Thursday, February 27th, not Wednesday.
Student Tour - Thursday, February 27, 2020, 12:00pm to 2:00pm
Open House - Thursday, February 27, 2020, 5:30pm to 7:00pm

This week we concluded our fraction unit with a look at word problems, writing a fraction as a division statement and finding the fraction of a whole number.  We worked to deepen our understanding of how to find the fractional amount of a whole number by drawing pictures but also learned that a quicker answer can be found by dividing the whole number by the denominator and then multiplying that answer by the numerator of the fraction.  Starting next week, we will be working with decimal numbers.

Students have started some research about the planets. We had a chance to play the Athens Board Games that students created. We have started on an Ancient Greek news article page where students have an opportunity to create an article about something that would have happened during 770 BCE.

Have a great weekend,

Ms. Blyth

Thursday, February 13

* School will resume Tuesday, February 18.

Dear 6C Parents and Students,

We had a short but enjoyable week skating on the ring beside the school.  A big thanks to all of the parent volunteers who came out to hand out skates and helmets, tie laces and console students who fell!

We have continued our look at fractions this week, learning how to compare them by making common denominators.  Using either division or multiplication, the students looked for the lowest common multiple between the two denominators and either changed one or both fractions. We also looked at finding the factional amounts of whole numbers.  Next week we will work on fraction word problems.  We will have a quiz next Thursday on all concepts related to fractions.

On Tuesday the students participated in an Artificial Intelligence Workshop hosted by Kids Code.  We learned how computers are being trained and coded to recognize images, human gestures, and facial features.  Like a young child, a computer needs to see a variety of images and examples if it wants to understand and recognize an object in the future. The students played a card game that asked them to identify common everyday object based on it characteristics (colour, shape, size, texture, etc).  After this, we used the website https://teachablemachine.withgoogle.com/ to teach a computer to recognize classroom objects and perform a task (i.e. show the computer a ruler and have it say your name.)

As part of kindness month, students created an art piece.  Yesterday students wrote kind messages on the back of all of their peers’ art pieces as well as for various staff members who they encounter during the day.

Yesterday was the last day for our student teacher Miss D.  Our classroom will miss her and we wish her the best on her teaching journey.

Enjoy your long weekend,

Ms. Blyth

Friday, February 7

Dear 6C Parents and Students,

We completed our second newspaper article write this year on Thursday, as part of our preparations toward the writing PAT in May.  The students were given a collection of facts about the invention of a hockey mask and used the knowledge they have gained about how articles are written, to create their own.  As we mark these articles we are looking for a catchy headline, and intro paragraph with the 5Ws, well-organized paragraphs, quotes throughout, and a strong conclusion.  The students will be sharing the progression of their article writing at Parent-Teacher conferences on March 19 & 20.

Students are wrapping up their Athenian board games.  Students will sculpt their player pieces out of clay on Monday, review their Athenian knowledge on Tuesday, and play the game on Wednesday.  Students need to make sure their characters, travel cards, and ancient site cards are complete.  Resources are shared with the students on Google Drive if any work needs to be completed over the weekend.

Students learned about the phases of the moon using Oreo cookies and a diagram that they made.  Have your child explain the different phases of the moon using the picture below and ask where the sun would be.  Next week students will begin their research project for the Sky Science unit.

Have a great weekend!

Ms. Blyth
