Weekly Update - October 18
Dear 6C Student and Parents,
Wow! What a short, but very busy week in grade 6. We started the week off working with
Calgary rapper Transit22. Each of the four grade 6 classrooms wrote a verse for our
Remembrance Day assembly song. 6A focused on D-Day, 6A on Vimy Ridge, and 6C/ 6D
on the after-effects of war. On Thursday, the students then recorded the song with Transit
in our makeshift recording studio in the DLC. On Monday, the students will be recording
a music video.

We also had our Buffalo teachings which focused on the following 4 teachings:
1. Take Responsibility for your Actions
2. Apologize and say you are sorry
3. Forgive yourself
4. Forgive others.

With the Federal election just around the corner, the students researched this week the
four major political parties (Liberals, Conservatives, Green and NDP) and then shared
what they learned with the teachers and grade 4 and 5 students on Thursday. All
division two students then voted in the Student Vote this morning. Results of the
Student Vote across Canada will be released along with the Federal election
results on Tuesday.

This morning we met with The Honorable Minister of Seniors and Housing - Josephine Pon.
Minister Pon was elected to the Alberta Legislature last April as the MLA of the Calgary - Beddington
area. She spoke about her responsibility to represent the people of Sandstone, MacEwan,
and surrounding communities. She explained what she does as a member of the Premier's
Cabinet and how she helps to create legislation to support senior citizens and people looking
for affordable housing in the province.

Happy Thanksgiving Long Week-end!
Dear
Grade 6C Parents and Students,
Next
week we will have the privilege of learning from our Artist in Residence and
Blackfoot knowledge keeper Ryan Jason Aleen Willert. He will speak to the 6’s about
the importance of tobacco and the pipe for Blackfoot people, the significance
of the law of the four colours and living like a Buffalo. The students
will learn what living like a Buffalo means; admitting when you have made a
mistake, apologizing, even if it is hard to do, forgiving yourself for your
errors and forgiving others when they have wronged you. As Mr. Willert
moves into painting the mural that will be displayed in the Multi-Purpose Room,
we will be working with him again.
In
preparation for our work with Calgary Rapper Transit22 next week, the students
have been researching the history behind the poppy and why we should remember
the veterans. The research will make up two of the verses in the song we
will start to write next week. Once the
song is complete, we will be recording a music video that will be shared at the
Remembrance Day assembly on November 7th (10:30am to 11:30am).
We
have been looking at how continuous and discrete data can be interpreted
visually using either a bar graph or a broken line graph. The students
learned that by continuing the line in the broken line graph you can predict
future information trends (i.e. what will the weather be next week based on the
trend of this week.)
Have
a great Thanksgiving weekend!

Dear Grade 6C
Parents,
Simons
Valley School is pleased to announce that Ryan Jason Allen Willert will be
working with the staff and students in the role of Artist in Residence starting
this upcoming week. Ryan is a full-time artist and storyteller born and raised
in Southern Alberta. Although he was brought up in a non-native community, he
has since reconnected with his Blackfoot roots (Siksika Nation). Ryan learned
the art of black ink drawing from his father Richard (Dicky) Stimson, another
well-known Siksika Nation artist. Among the many exhibitions where he has
presented his work are the City of Calgary and Calgary’s Glenbow Museum. Ryan
will be sharing the Buffalo teachings with our staff and students and in turn,
creating a mural in our multipurpose area. Please come hear him speak at the Parent
Council meeting on Thursday, October 10th at 7 pm.
When Ryan is working with the children, he will be smudging.

This week we
completed our Local Government city maps and had our friends in grade 4/5 come
and learn about what makes a great city. With a Federal election on
October 21st, we will be turning our focus on the voting process and
understanding the different parties and leaders running for election.
We had a great time
at the Apple store on Thursday learning about how to use Keynote (Powerpoint)
and animate and create choose your own adventure stories. We will be
looking at ways to utilize this application in the future for other story
writing pieces and projects.
We will be going to
Nose Hill Park on Monday, after lunch. Please make sure your child wears
appropriate footwear and clothing and brings a water bottle. We will be going
as part of our Trees and Forest unit.
Have a great
weekend,
Ms. Blyth
